Enlarge Hippopotamus Goddess
MMA Burton photo TAA409

This detail is of the head of the hippopotamus goddess from one of the gilded ritual couches in the Antechamber. The composite creature has the body of a lion and the tail of a crocodile. Her fierce aspect is emphasized by her open mouth with its ivory teeth and tongue, the latter stained red.
