Arthur Mace (standing, at the left) and Alfred Lucas (seated, at the right) cleaning and securing the surface of one of the chariots. The nearby tomb of Seti II was converted into a laboratory for the repair and conservation of the objects from the tomb before they were packed for shipment to the Egyptian Museum in Cairo. Mace, an archaeologist with considerable experience in the treatment and reconstruction of fragile objects, had worked for the Metropolitan Museum since 1907. Lucas, who was a research chemist, wrote the first book on ancient Egyptian materials.
