Enlarge Section of a Chariot Body
MMA Burton photo TAA322

This section of a chariot body shows a group of bound prisoners facing a large inlaid rosette and the king in the form of a sphinx at the far left. The prisoners are tied together by the papyrus-and-lotus-plant tendrils that issue from the unification sign at the upper right. The highly detailed costume and hairstyle of each of the prisoners, who represent the traditional African, Near Eastern, and Libyan enemies of Egypt, are carefully depicted.
