MMA Burton photo TAA678

Howard Carter looks through the doors of the second shrine. The gold foil covering the leaf of the door is incised in low relief with a beautifully executed scene of the pharaoh before the god Osiris. All of the shrines were inscrbied inside and out with spells from the Book of the Dead and other religious texts. The doors of the shrines open to the east, toward the rising sun.
