Enlarge Examining the Innermost Coffin
MMA Burton photo TAA1354

Carter and one of his workmen examine the third innermost coffin of the king, which is made of solid gold and still rests inside the second coffin. The black substance on its surface is aromatic resin that had been poured over the inner coffin during the funeral ceremonies, and had hardened, making it very difficult to separate the gold coffin from the second one.
