Nomadic Art of the Eastern Eurasian Steppes: The Eugene V. Thaw and Other New York Collections
October 1, 2002January 5, 2003 Special Exhibition Galleries, 1st floor
This exhibition presents the dynamic art of the nomads who roamed the Eastern Eurasian steppes during the first millennium B.C. and influenced the art of the sedentary cultures that came in contact with them. Drawn largely from the collection of Eugene V. Thaw, a recent gift to the Museum, with selections from other private collections and the Metropolitan’s holdings, the more than 200 works in bronze, gold, and silver include horse harness and chariot fittings, belt ornaments, garment plaques, weapons, and vessels that are characterized by bold designs and skilled craftsmanship. Accompanied by a catalogue.
