The Elliott Collection of Chinese calligraphy is perhaps the finest outside Asia, spanning the period from the inception of writing as a fine art in the fourth century to the modern era. This exhibition of more than fifty-five hanging scrolls, handscrolls, and album leaves from the Elliott collection, accompanied by a nearly equal number of selections from the Metropolitan's renowned John M. Crawford Collection Jr. and private collections, constitutes the most important display of calligraphy ever assembled in the West. The exhibition was organized by The Art Museum, Princeton University.
