Clearance - Gaspar Christmas Ornament

	Much Christmas imagery in European art is taken from descriptions of the events in the Gospels of Luke and Matthew. Over time, however, artists have added details not found in the Bible stories. For example, the three wise men from the East became kings. Their number was set at three (to match the three gifts cited in the Gospel—gold, frankincense, and myrrh), and they acquired physical characteristics that identified them with different ages or races. Some of the Christmas customs and imagery that survive today come to us from St. Francis of Assisi, who is said to have made the first crèche (a representation of the Nativity scene) at Greccio, Italy, in 1223. Our Gaspar Christmas Ornament is based on the figure in an 18th-century South German crèche, with vividly colored figures of gouache on paper, in the Museum’s collection.
