Sale - Sean Scully: Wall of Light
Sean Scully: Wall of Light
Edited by Stephen Bennett Phillips, with essays by Michael Auping, Stephen Bennett Phillips, and Anne L. Strauss. Published in conjunction with the exhibition “Sean Scully: Wall of Light” at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, September 26, 2006–January 15, 2007.

Over the past thirty years, Sean Scully (American, born Ireland, 1945) has gained renown as an abstract painter. He has produced a vibrant and compelling body of work that is widely collected and internationally exhibited, which combines the formal European tradition of painting with forms of aesthetic experience rooted in American abstraction. His familiar style of lines or bands of color, alluding to architectural elements such as portals, windows, and walls, is one of the most instantly recognizable signatures in contemporary painting. This volume chronicles the creation of Wall of Light, a stunning series of paintings, watercolors, pastels, and prints. Inspired by the artist’s first visits to Mexico in the early 1980s, where he observed the play of light and shadow on ancient stone walls, this ongoing and distinctive body of work focuses on an exploration of abstract forms affected by light, evoking a range of emotional and narrative themes. As the series continues, Scully moves beyond Mexico, documenting his responses to other climes and conditions. Paintings from 1998 to the present are constructed with rectangular forms, closely fitted and arranged in horizontal and vertical groupings like bricks in a wall, and characterized by broad, gestural brushstrokes, a wide range of luminous colors built up in layers, and varying degrees of overall light and darkness. The resulting paintings combine color and shape in a way that is more airy and balanced than his earlier work.

173 pages, 120 full-color illustrations, 9 3/4 in. x 10 3/4 in. Hardcover; clothbound, with jacket.
