Sale - Music of Barcelona CD
Music of Barcelona CD
The rise of modernism in Europe, including the Modernisme movement in Catalonia, produced a sea of change in all the arts, including music. In Barcelona, the music that emerged was uniquely complex and multifaceted. Composers paid homage to the legacy of the past—drawn to mythology, the Middle Ages, Gothic art, and the Renaixença, the movement to resurrect the Catalan language and culture. At the same time, music embraced new artistic currents, including Impressionism, atonality, Serialism, the 12-tone technique, and pan-Spanish Nationalism. This “new” form of music infused Barcelona’s concert halls, cafés, and salons, where it was enthusiastically embraced by Catalan society. This compilation contains a varied selection of works by some of the most influential and important composers on the Barcelona music scene during the Modernisme period, including Francisco Tárrega (1852–1909), Isaac Albéniz (1860–1909), Enrique Granados (1867–1916), Manuel de Falla (1876–1946), and Federico Mompou (1893–1987). The CD concludes with a composition by the renowned Spanish guitarist Andrés Segovia (1893–1987), who played in Barcelona in 1916 and performed at The Metropolitan Museum of Art in 1963 as part of its Concerts and Lectures Series. The guitar that he played at his United States debut (pictured on the back of this CD) is now in the permanent collection of the Museum.
