Rain of the Moon: Silver in Ancient Peru
Rain of the Moon: Silver in Ancient Peru
By Heidi King, with contributions by Luis Jaime Castillo Butters and Paloma Carcedo de Mufarech, 2000. Published in conjunction with the exhibition "Rain of the Moon: Silver in Ancient Peru" at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, November 3, 2000–April 22, 2001.

This catalogue presents objects of silver—items of personal adornment, tomb offerings, and miniatures—from several Peruvian cultures that thrived along the coastal and highland regions of the South American Andes from the first millenium B.C.E. to the Spanish conquest of 1532–34. A symbol of power and prestige, silver also held religious significance, its soft, cool sheen symbolizing the moon, a female diety. Found at sites occupied by such cultures as the Moche, the Lambayeque, the Chimú, and the Inka, objects of silver are extremely rare.

64 pages, 42 illustrations (12 full-color plates), 8 1/2 in. x 11 in. Paper.
