Silversmiths to the Nation: Thomas Fletcher and Sidney Gardiner, 1808–1842
Silversmiths to the Nation: Thomas Fletcher and Sidney Gardiner, 1808–1842
By Donald L. Fennimore and Ann K. Wagner, with contributions by Cathy Matson, Deborah Dependahl Waters, Beth Carver Wees. Published in conjunction with the exhibition “Silversmiths to the Nation: Thomas Fletcher and Sidney Gardiner, 1808–1842” at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, November 20, 2007–May 4, 2008.

This volume presents the first in-depth study of the celebrated silversmiths Thomas Fletcher and Sidney Gardiner and their magnificent work. The firm these men established in Boston (1808–11) and relocated to Philadelphia (1811–42) elevated the significance of silver in America as a medium of public appreciation, thus introducing a new era in silver production. Some 100 works from the firm, many of which come from private collections, are published for the first time in this lavishly illustrated volume. A number of associated paintings and prints, in addition to little-known Fletcher & Gardiner working drawings from the collection at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, help broaden the scope of the presentation and set the works in context. Also included in the book is an extensive appendix that presents a pictorial record of the maker’s marks used by the firm and its associates. A survey of the skill and artistry of Fletcher & Gardiner, this publication is an important reference for collectors, curators, and silver enthusiasts alike.

287 pages, 297 illustrations (195 in full color). 9 1/4 in. x 12 in. Hardcover; clothbound, with jacket.
