Byzantine Silver Link Necklace
Byzantine Silver Link Necklace
The Museum’s Byzantine Silver Link Necklace is based on a chain from a Byzantine censer from an early Christian community in Northern Syria, ca. 500–650 A.D. The censer was a religious vessel that was filled with heated incense and swung by a deacon during the liturgy. The censer is one of three found, along with ten chalices, a strainer, and a dove representing the Holy Spirit—all finely crafted and richly detailed in silver gilt. The hoard, called the Attarouthi Treasure, is thought to have been found many years ago inside a giant storage jar buried near the ancient Byzantine city of Attarouthi, a portion of the Early Byzantine Empire that fell to Islam in the mid-seventh century.

Sterling silver. Length 20 in.
