Clearance - Rembrandt Sketchbook
Rembrandt Sketchbook
The front cover of this sketchbook features a reproduction of Portrait of Rembrandt Leaning on a Stone Sill, an etching produced in 1639 by Dutch master Rembrandt van Rijn (1606–1669) and now in the Museum’s collection. This self-portrait is one of the many etchings and drypoints Rembrandt produced between 1626 and 1665. Although his career as a printmaker ran parallel to his career as a painter, Rembrandt rarely treated the same themes in both media, and only occasionally reproduced his paintings in prints. Above all, he was a great innovator and experimenter in printmaking, often handling traditional materials in unconventional ways. Rembrandt's own face is a common feature in his earlier prints, which were probably meant as studies of varied expressions rather than self-portraits. The back cover of our sketchbook features a reproduction of Landscape with Three Trees, an etching produced in 1643 in which Rembrandt created an intensely dramatic depiction of the typically blustery and rainy Dutch weather. The image at the bottom of the back cover is a reproduction of the drawing Cottage Among Trees, produced around 1650. Among Rembrandt's sketches of rustic farmhouses and cottages, this drawing is unusually finished in execution and formal in composition.

32 acid-free, unlined pages. 9 1/4 in. x 7 1/4 in. Hardcover; spiral bound, with ribbon closure.
