Antoine-Louis Barye: Bull
Antoine-Louis Barye: Bull
The sculptor Antoine-Louis Barye (French, 1795–1875) was fascinated by the primal energy of the animal world. To him and other Romantic artists, the unrestrained and unfettered actions of animals were regarded as true embodiments of instinct, a quality they valued over reason. Barye closely studied the anatomy of animals and their movement, incorporating realistic details into his representations. Although adept at creating monumental sculpture, Barye found his greatest success with small bronzes. By 1845, he began producing them in numbers for middle-class collectors. The Museum's Bull is a reproduction of an original sculpture (ca. 1842) by Barye.

Bonded bronze, hand patinated. Height including base 7 in., width 11 in., depth 4 in.
