Auspicious Symbols Vase
Auspicious Symbols Vase
The use of symbols in Buddhist art appeared around the 3rd century B.C., and among these were a set of eight that were considered to be particularly auspicious: the parasol, two golden fish, the wheel, the treasure vase, the victory banner, the lotus, the endless knot, and the right-turning conch shell. These symbols—thought to represent favorable circumstances or good luck—were used to decorate all manner of sacred and secular Buddhist objects, such as furniture, metalwork, ceramics, and jewelry. The design on the Museum’s Auspicious Symbols Vase is based on a Chinese original that was part of an altar set in the late 18th to early 19th century. The use of pink and the refinement of the polychrome enameling technique are considered highlights of 18th-century imperial porcelain. The body of the original features a scrolling lotus (an auspicious symbol associated with purity) and several other of the symbols appear throughout the design. Produced in cooperation with the Peabody Essex Museum, Salem, Massachusetts.

Hand-painted porcelain. Height 18 in., width 6 in., depth 6 in. For decorative use only.
