Medieval Wreath Tapestry
Medieval Wreath Tapestry
Stimulated by the presence of the Burgundian court, the Southern Netherlands became one of the most powerful and artistically sophisticated regions in Europe from the end of the 14th to the end of the 15th century. Although the Burgundian court was the single most important artistic patron during the period, private citizens were no less interested in using art to express their spiritual concerns and personal ambitions. Costly materials and sophisticated workmanship combined to make art highly valued as interior decoration and as a reflection of wealth or status. Tapestries were particularly expensive and visible ways to decorate one’s home and demonstrate one’s ideals. Our tapestry is based on a charming South Netherlandish wall hanging from about 1490–1550 entitled Wreath on a Ground of Flowers, Birds, and Rabbits in the Museum’s collection at The Cloisters.

Imported wool and cotton. Height 43 in., width 33 in. Includes a hidden sleeve on the reverse side for hanging.
