Harappan Bead Earrings with Carnelian
Harappan Bead Earrings with Carnelian
The world’s first cities emerged at the end of the 4th and during the 3rd millennium B.C. in a vast region that extends from the Mediterranean Sea to the Indus River Valley. Astonishing contributions to civilization were achieved in urban centers such as Ur in Mesopotamia, Troy in Anatolia, and Mohenjo-daro in the Indus Valley. Remarkable works of sculpture, jewelry, vessels, weapons, and seals survive from elaborate palaces, rich burials, and monumental temples in this region. The Museum’s earrings are based on the style of original beads that were produced in Mohenjo-daro, also referred to as the Harappan civilization, around 2600–1900 B.C. Produced in cooperation with the Mohenjo-Daro Museum, Pakistan.

24K gold plate, with carnelian. Length 1/2 in. Pierced, with 14K gold ear wires.
