Unknown Artist: Head of a Youth Relief

	During the 6th century B.C. in Greece, Athens became one of the wealthiest city-states in Attica and a leader in artistic achievement. The more affluent Athenian families often commissioned statues or steles as a way to memorialize ancestors. Our Head of a Youth Relief is a reproduction of part of a marble stele from Attica around 525 B.C. now in the Museum’s collection. The original stele is typical of those produced during the 6th century, where the sculptor first drew the figure facing right on a marble block, and then cut away the surrounding stone to render a delicate raised relief on a separated background plane. Among the many characteristics that distinguish sculpture produced at that time are the meticulously rendered surface details; a band encircles the youth’s head, and the skillfully carved, stylized curls fringe his face and the nape of his neck. The lips of our youth arch upwards, revealing a hint of an Archaic smile—also a common feature of Greek sculpture from this era. Cast marble, hand patinated.
