Renaissance Tourmaline Ring
Renaissance Tourmaline Ring
The Museum’s ring is based on the one depicted on the pointer finger of the sitter in the oil painting Portrait of a Man with a Gold-Embroidered Cap by Lucas Cranach the Elder (German, 1472–1553). Completed in 1532, this painting depicts a courtier with a focused expression and parted beard wearing the black-and-yellow striped dress of high-ranking members of the court of the electors of Saxony at Wittenberg. Born into a family of painters, Cranach became a celebrated court painter for the electors of Saxony in 1505.
