Cartographer and geographer Abraham Ortelius (Flemish, 1527–1598) created Theatrum Orbis Terrarum (Theater of the World), a collection of 53 maps of the most renowned geographers of the period, published in 1570. This important work marked the first time all of the elements of the modern atlas were brought together for publication. The Museum’s presentation box features a reproduction of one of the 16th-century maps from Theatrum Orbis Terrarum. Produced in cooperation with The Huntington Library, Art Collections, and Botanical Gardens, San Marino, California.

Varnished wood with a brown lacquered finish; with an inlaid ceramic tile top, and green velvet interior. Length 7 3/4 in., width 6 in., height 2 3/4 in.
