	Fruits and flowers thrive at The Cloisters, a branch of the Metropolitan Museum devoted to the art and architecture of the Middle Ages. Opened in 1938, and located in Fort Tryon Park in northern Manhattan, the extraordinary building and gardens are designed in the style of a European monastery with three renowned cloister gardens to complete the setting. More than 300 species of plants grow at The Cloisters, including the evergreen Myrtus communis, commonly known as myrtle. Since antiquity, myrtle has been revered for its beauty and fragrance. The Greeks associated myrtle with Aphrodite, goddess of love, and wove it into bridal garlands, a tradition that continues today. Sprays of myrtle were also incorporated into exquisite gold wreaths worn in processions and given as prizes in competitions.
