The Written Image: Japanese Calligraphy and Painting from the Sylvan Barnet and William Burto Collection
The Written Image: Japanese Calligraphy and Painting from the Sylvan Barnet and William Burto Collection
By Miyeko Murase, with contributions by Sylvan Barnet and William Burto, Karen L. Brock, Sondra Castile, Maxwell K. Hearn, Tadayuki Kasashima, Denise Patry Leidy, Masako Watanabe, and Yuji Yamashita. Produced in conjunction with the exhibition "The Written Image: Japanese Calligraphy and Painting from the Sylvan Barnet and William Burto Collection" at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, October 1, 2002–March 2, 2003.

Calligraphy is often regarded as the purest manifestation of an artist's inner character and level of cultivation, as well as the expression of his soul, thoughts, and feelings. This publication presents some fifty-eight Japanese works, almost all calligraphy, from the remarkable collection formed over the last forty years by Sylvan Barnet and William Burto, literary scholars who became enraptured by the Japanese art of the brush. Their holdings, virtually unique outside Japan, not only embody a fundamental aspect of Japanese culture but also testify to the growing sophistication of Americans' engagement with other cultures. Essays written by the collectors discuss the history of their collection, and also provide insight into the ways in which Japanese calligraphy can be appreciated.

208 pages, 108 illustrations (75 in full color), 8 3/4 in. x 11 1/2 in. Hardcover; clothbound, with jacket.
