Met Bestseller - Tiffany Silhouetted Dragonfly Pin
Tiffany Silhouetted Dragonfly Pin
A master of many media, Louis Comfort Tiffany (1848–1933) was one of America’s most noted decorative artists at the turn of the century. Son of the founder of the silver and jewelry firm Tiffany and Company of New York, Louis Tiffany began his career as a painter but moved quickly to interior decoration and leaded-glass windows, creating innovative types of opalescent glass that radiated deep, vibrant hues. In addition to stained-glass windows and lighting fixtures, Tiffany’s studios also made luminous glass vases and bowls, pottery, furniture, textiles, jewelry, and works in bronze and enamel. Tiffany’s lifelong fascination with light led him to find new ways to incorporate electric lighting and pioneer artistic adaptations of the light bulb in his designs. The Dragonfly Lamp was one of the studios' earliest and most successful designs that won a prize at the Paris International Exposition in 1900. Large, identical dragonflies decorate the lampshade against a verdant background of stylized foliage, showing Tiffany's interest in nature motifs. The design on our pin is based on the dragonflies gracing the original leaded-glass lamp. Produced in cooperation with The Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art, Winter Park, Florida.

Sterling silver, lightly antiqued, with enamel. Length 2 in., width 4 1/6 in.
