Vermeer: The Complete Works
Vermeer: The Complete Works
By Arthur K. Wheelock, Jr.

Johannes Vermeer (1632–1675), one of the great masters of the Dutch Golden Age, ranks among the most admired of all Dutch artists, but he was much less well known in his own day than Rembrandt and Frans Hals, and remained relatively obscure until the end of the 19th century. He only produced a small number of pictures, of which thirty-four are known today, primarily for a small circle of patrons in Delft. In most of his works, Vermeer idealized a domestic world occupied mainly by women, whose postures, behavior, and in some cases expressions suggest close study and sympathy. He often hints at a connection between a figure and the viewer, subtly casting the latter in the role of a spellbound voyeur. Collected in this absorbing book are illustrations and critical examinations of Vermeer's esteemed works, as well as an illuminating essay on the artist by the author, a noted authority on Dutch seventeenth century subjects.

71 pages, 56 illustrations (36 in full color), 10 1/2 in. x 14 5/8 in. Paper.
