French Fish Net Scarf
French Fish Net Scarf
With the opening of Japanese ports to trade with the West in 1854, Japanese designs became wildly fashionable in Europe and the United States, and artisans also sought to imitate the technique of Japanese ceramics. The image on our scarf is adapted from a drawn study of a charming covered dish designed by Amédée de Caranza (active France, 1870s–1880s). The chief designer at a French porcelain factory owned by Albert and Charles Vieillard, Caranza has been described as having a fascination for the Japanese aesthetic known as japonisme. The design for Caranza’s covered dish features images of fish seen through gilded fishnets swimming in lily-padded waters.

Imported silk crêpe de chine. 64 in. x 18 in.
