19th-Century Gold Heart Earrings

	The Museum’s earrings are based on a detail of a French locket and key from the 19th century, part of a category of jewelry known as "bijoux sportifs." The original piece is copper gilt and decorated with translucent enamels. Consisting of simple shapes and fluid lines in matte finish, bijoux sportifs could be worn in more casual circumstances than in the jealously guarded, formal occasions of the aristocracy. 14K gold with 24K gold plate. Length 7/8 in. Pierced, with 14K gold posts.
