Unknown Artist: Madonna and Child
Unknown Artist: Madonna and Child
Many ivories, metalwork, and other precious objects have survived largely because they have been preserved in churches. The Metropolitan Museum, however, holds many remarkable Romanesque and Gothic enamels, ivories, metalwork, and textiles dating from the 12th to the 16th century in excellent condition. The most popular and appealing subject of French 14th-century sculpture is the Virgin and Child. The Museum’s figure of the Virgin holding the Christ Child is reproduced from an ivory statuette in the Museum’s collection made in Northern France about 1350.

Cast marble, hand patinated. Height including base 10 1/2 in., width 3 in., depth 1 3/4 in.
