Childe Hassam (American, 1859–1935) was a pioneer of American Impressionism and perhaps its most devoted, prolific, and successful practitioner. He caught the spirit of the new painting in Paris in the late 1880s, while most of his compatriots were still ignoring it. He contributed to the full flowering of American Impressionism in the United States in the 1890s and rode the great wave of enthusiasm for the style to fame and fortune. This volume accompanies a major exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum, the first retrospective presentation of Hassam's work in a museum since 1972. Essays by H. Barbara Weinberg and other experts reconsider his formative period in Boston and student years in Paris, analyze his rural and urban scenes in terms of their Impressionist formal values as well as measured against his determination to portray modern life, and explore other topics to shed new light on the artist's achievements.
