Clearance - Getty Tapestry Scarf
Getty Tapestry Scarf
The design on our scarf is based on a detail from a tapestry in the series The Story of the Emperor of China, produced in France around 1690–1705. As part of his continual efforts to promote French industry, Louis XIV’s finance minister Jean-Baptiste Colbert founded the Beauvais Tapestry Manufactory in 1664. The Manufactory created the original tapestry, which was commissioned by Louis-Alexandre de Bourbon, comte de Toulouse and a legitimized son of Louis XIV. Each of the ten hangings in the series is monogrammed with the Bourbon coat of arms, and scholars presume that the fictional scenes on the series depict episodes from the life of the Qing Dynasty emperor Shunzhi or his successor Kangxi. Jesuit missionaries returning from Asia, with their stories of life at the Chinese court, inspired the public’s interest in the East. The subsequent engravings of Chinese architecture, plants, and animals published in the 1660s and later provided a wealth of visual information for European artists to copy.
