Met Bestseller - Tiffany Laurelton Hall Mosaic Strap Watch
Tiffany Laurelton Hall Mosaic Strap Watch

A master of many media, Louis Comfort Tiffany (1848–1933) was one of America’s most noted decorative artists at the turn of the century. Son of the founder of the silver and jewelry firm Tiffany and Company of New York, Louis Tiffany began his career as a painter but moved quickly to interior decoration. In addition to stained-glass windows and lighting fixtures, Tiffany’s studios also made luminous glass vases and bowls, pottery, furniture, textiles, jewelry, and works in bronze and enamel. Tiffany’s country house, Laurleton Hall, was his architectural masterpiece. Situated on 600 acres overlooking Long Island Sound, the sprawling estate was a showcase both for Tiffany’s own work and for his vast collection of artwork and decorative art from around the world. In the dining room of the estate was a large mantelpiece, essentially a floor-to-ceiling sheet of light-colored marble. Three instrument faces set with blue mosaic adorned it, including one beautiful clock face, on which the Museum's watch is based. Produced in cooperation with the Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art, Winter Park, Florida.

Mother-of-pearl and enamel inlay dial. Czech crystals on lugs and crown, with blue leather strap. With Japanese movement. Length 8 in.; face diameter 1 5/15 in.
