Sale - Egyptian Disk Necklace
Egyptian Disk Necklace

This necklace is adapted from a single-strand of gold disk beads (Egyptian, late Dynasty 17–early Dynasty 18, ca. 1560–1450 B.C.) found in a tomb in western Thebes, across the Nile from the modern-day city of Luxor. Excavated by the Museum in 1916, the tomb dates to a transitional period in Egyptian history when the ruling family of Thebes (Dynasty 17) was reuniting the country after a period of disunity. Several generations later, kings descended from the same family would present multi-stranded necklaces of large disk beads, called shebiu necklaces, to their most valued officials.

24K gold plate. Inner circumference approx. 16 1/8 in.
