Art Nouveau Lily of the Valley Pin
Art Nouveau Lily of the Valley Pin

Art Nouveau was an artistic movement that took place at the end of the 19th century through the beginning of the 20th century. The movement expressed a natural and fluid style of decoration, where swaying lines, flowers, animals, and sinuous female figures were characteristic motifs incorporated into objects as varied as jewelry, glass vases, and furniture. Craftsmanship and aestheticism were greatly valued, and emphasis was placed on the decorative arts and the use of diverse materials. In part a reaction to the mechanization of the Industrial Revolution, Art Nouveau originated in France and Belgium about 1890. The movement spread throughout Western Europe and the United States, maintaining its influence through the First World War. The exact origins of the brooch on which the Museum's pin is based are unknown, but its sinuous lily shape is typical of the Art Nouveau style. The original brooch was cast iron or gun-metal, with pearl flower heads and polished steel calyxes. Produced in cooperation with The British Museum, London.

Sterling silver, with crystals and cultured freshwater pearls. Length 2 3/8 in., width 1 3/8 in.
