Great Houses of Texas

By Lisa Germany; Photography by Grant Mudford

Texas native Lisa Germany takes the reader on a tour of 25 of the most spectacular private homes in the Lone Star State. With work by internationally acclaimed architects such as Philip Johnson, Maurice Fatio, Steven Holl, and Paul Rudolph along with that of homegrown talents such as O’Neil Ford, Ted Flato, David Lake, and Frank Welch, Texas boasts some of the most extraordinary residential architecture in America. Among them are the 1854 Woodlawn, a Greek Revival house; the famed King Ranch; the restored De Menil house; and the sweepingly dramatic Anne Bass home. Some are lavish and monumental, while others are more diminutive and intimate. Dating from the mid-19th century to the present day and scattered across the state, many of these houses are marked by their response to a landscape so powerful that a vernacular tradition has taken shape, effectively branding a Texas style. Traveling by van across the state, author Germany and photographer Grant Mudford visited each of these homes and captured their essence in evocative words and gorgeous photography.

256 pages, 225 color illustrations. 9 3/4 in. x 11 3/4 in. Hardcover; clothbound, with jacket.
