The Golden Deer of Eurasia: Perspectives on the Steppe Nomads of the Ancient World
The Golden Deer of Eurasia: Perspectives on the Steppe Nomads of the Ancient World

Edited by Joan Aruz, Ann Farkas, and Elisabetta Valtz Fino, with contributions by David W. Anthony, Thomas J. Barfield, Peter S. Wells, Leonid T. Yablonsky, Karen S. Rubinson, Anatolii Kh. Pshenichniuk, Gernot Windfuhr, Aleksei Bantikov, Jeannine Davis-Kimball, Liudmila Koryakova, Henri-Paul Francfort, Giancarlo Ligabue, Zainullah Samashev, Konstantin V. Chugunov, Anatolii Nagler, Hermann Parzinger, Jianjun Mei, Askold Ivantchik, Oscar White Muscarella, Andrei Alekseev, Renate Rolle, Esther Jacobson, and Elena Korolkova.

This volume was published as a result of the symposium held in October, 2000 in conjunction with the exhibition “The Golden Deer of Eurasia: Scythian and Sarmatian Treasures from the Russian Steppes" at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, October 12, 2000–February 4, 2001. The exhibition highlighted the rich finds unearthed from burial mounds near the village of Filippovka in the southern Ural steppes between 1986 and 1990. These extraordinary objects include 26 gold and silver deer, as well as hundreds of gold mounts for wooden cups. Carefully restored and analyzed, these objects have contributed the knowledge of funerary beliefs and practices of the Eurasian nomads. The symposium featured several speakers, who presented regional perspectives on the broad expanse of the steppe corridor. The speakers discussed exciting discoveries from archaeological excavations not only at Filippovka, but also at Pokrovka in the Urals, Bel’sk in the Pontic steppes, Berel in the Altai region of Kazakhstan, Arzhan near Tuva in southern Siberia, and Xinjiang in western China. This volume brings together 20 essays that contribute significantly to our view of the steppe world and that also present new avenues of interpretations regarding the spectacular golden deer of Eurasia.

256 pages, 178 illustrations (29 in full color).7 3/4 in. x 10 in. Paper.
