The Imperial Porcelain and Glass Factories were created in 1890 by the merger of the Imperial Glassworks, a showcase manufactory originally founded on the orders of Catherine II in 1777, with the Imperial Porcelain Factory. Under the new arrangement, modern techniques and equipment were acquired from Europe and the quality of the factory's output greatly improved. From that time, the glass shop worked only for the Imperial Court, giving it tremendous opportunities to create ambitious and unique works—among them, the exquisite pair of lead glass vases (1914) from which our Etched Poppy Bowl is adapted. Nearly two feet in height, the vases feature a gracefully swirling motif of long-stemmed poppies delicately etched into the glass in the Art Nouveau style. Produced in cooperation with the Hillwood Museum and Gardens, Washington, D.C.

Crystal; hand made. Height 4 10/16 in., diameter 9 in. Not for use in microwave and dishwasher.
