Cubist-Style Watch
Cubist-Style Watch

The Art Deco style is named after the Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes of 1925. Its popularity extended through the 1930s from Europe to the United States, and was applied by artists and architects to a wide variety of media. The aesthetic focused on simple forms, often geometric or stylized from nature, smooth lines, and bold colors. Among the leading designers in the Art Deco movement was Jean Goulden. The Museum’s Cubist-Style Watch is based on one of Goulden’s clocks from 1929. The original clock, which is made of silvered bronze, enamel, and marble, is a decorative object in the purest sense: no Roman or Arabic numerals are allowed to disturb its face, and even the disposition of the dominant triangles on its face is decorative, irrational, and non-functional. It is a striking example of the Art Deco aesthetic. Produced in cooperation with the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, Richmond. Artwork ©2006 Artists Rights Society (ARS), New York/ADAGP, Paris. Reproduction ©2006 The Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Stainless steel, with flat mineral crystal and black calf-leather strap. With Swiss movement; water resistant. Length 7 3/4 in., face width 1 3/8 in.
