Sale - Picenes Necklace with Pearls
Picenes Necklace with Pearls

In early Iron Age Italy, before the emergence of the Etruscans, the central plains were dotted with settlements of a variety of ethnically distinct tribes, one of which was the Picenes. The Picenes buried their deceased family members fully dressed in the garments and adornments they had worn in life, which included heavy necklaces, earrings, bracelets, and fibulae (pins) of silver and bronze. The Picenes embellished many of these ornaments with the addition of hanging chains formed by multiple links with a loose ring attached to alternate links. The Museum's necklace is based on long chains suspended from an elaborate fibula dating from the 8th–7th century B.C. Produced in cooperation with the Walters Art Museum, Baltimore.

Silver plate, with cultured freshwater pearls. Hand made. Length approx. 17 1/2 in.
