Abstract Expressionism and Other Modern Works: The Muriel Kallis Steinberg Newman Collection in The Metropolitan Museum of Art
Abstract Expressionism and Other Modern Works: The Muriel Kallis Steinberg Newman Collection in The Metropolitan Museum of Art

Edited by Gary Tinterow, Lisa Mintz Messinger, and Nan Rosenthal. Published in conjunction with the exhibition “Abstract Expressionism and Other Modern Works: The Muriel Kallis Steinberg Newman Collection in The Metropolitan Museum of Art” at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, September 18, 2007–February 3, 2008.

The Muriel Kallis Steinberg Newman Collection, comprising 63 modern paintings, sculptures, and works on paper by 50 artists, was given to the Metropolitan Museum in 2006. The addition of these works to the permanent collection greatly augments the Museum’s holdings of modern art, particularly paintings by the Abstract Expressionists. The Newman collection includes the only extant grouping of Abstract Expressionist works collected at the time of their creation, including paintings by Arshile Gorky, Franz Kline, Willem de Kooning, Jackson Pollock, and Clyfford Still. Also part of the gift are works by such other well-known American artists as Joseph Cornell, Arthur Dove, Anne Ryan, the abstract painters Morris Louis and Kenneth Noland, and the Pop artist Claes Oldenburg. A number of fine examples of earlier 20th-century European modernism include paintings by Max Ernst, Fernand Léger, and Joan Miró, a mixed media collage by Kurt Schwitters, and a relief by Jean Arp. This publication presents the history of this remarkable collection that represents works by so many outstanding artists, and tells the story of an extraordinary woman, Muriel Kallis, who traveled to New York City to collect these works over the course of three decades. The volume opens with an engaging interview by Museum curator Gary Tinterow with Muriel Kallis Newman, followed by comprehensive entries on all the pieces in the collection. Each work of art is reproduced in full color, and all the entries have been written by prominent art historians.

214 pages, 109 illustrations (96 in full-color), 9 1/2 in. x 12 1/4 in. Hardcover; clothbound, with jacket.
