Sultan's Crown Pearl Earrings

In the Museum’s collection is a woodcut portrait of Suleiman the Magnificent (1494–1566), one of the sultans of the Ottoman Empire. The main focus of the portrait is not the sultan himself, but rather the fantastic crown he wears. Venetian goldsmiths created the crown with the expectation of selling it to Suleiman. According to a source from the period, the goldsmiths decorated the impressive crown with rubies, diamonds, pearls, turquoise, and other beautiful gems. These earrings are based on the pearls that appear on the crown in the portrait.
