In A.D. 330, the first Christian ruler of the Roman empire, Constantine the Great, transferred the imperial capital from Rome to the ancient city of Byzantion, renaming it Constantinople. The empire ruled from that city would come to be called Byzantium. The artistic traditions of the wealthy state extended throughout the empire, including the southernmost province of Egypt. The Museum’s cross is based on an original from the 6th–7th century that may have been found in Egypt near a Christian church dedicated to the popular warrior saint Theodore Stratelates and built on the grounds of Medinet Habu, the early 12th-century B.C. mortuary temple of Ramesses III.
