New - The Ancient World at War: A Global History
The Ancient World at War: A Global History

Edited by Philip de Souza

This first global history of ancient warfare ranges in time from 8000 B.C. and the earliest definite evidence for warfare in northern Iraq to the armies of the Aztecs and Incas in the 16th century. Distinguished historians and archaeologists analyze armies, tactics, and equipment as well as the underlying social, economic, and cultural factors that contributed to Alexander the Great’s triumph against Persia, Hannibal’s conflict with Rome, the Han Chinese defeat of the nomadic Xiongnu horsemen, and the Inca ruler Atahualpa’s last stand against Pizarro, and more. Each chapter begins with a listing of key dates, and there are maps and newly commissioned 3-D reconstructions of such key battles as Qadesh, Issus, and Cannae. Philip de Souza, a leading authority on ancient warfare and maritime history, is a Lecturer in Classics at University College Dublin and a Fellow of the Royal Historical Society.

320 pages, 351 illustrations (150 in full color). 8 3/4 in. x 10 7/8 in. Hardcover; clothbound, with jacket.
