Pietre Dure Floral Presentation Box
Pietre Dure Floral Presentation Box

The elegant flower and fruit motif on our presentation box is based on the design of a pietre dure tabletop from around 1855–60 from Florence. The Italian term pietre dure—literally meaning “hard stone”—refers to the artistic cutting of semi-precious stones, such as agate, lapis lazuli, and others, to fashion extravagant luxury objects, from architectural ornament and furniture to ornate display items and personal jewelry. The demanding practice of pietre dure enjoyed a spectacular revival in the Renaissance and throughout the Baroque period. The style reached its first pinnacle in the 16th century due to the interest of Grand Duke Ferdinando I de’ Medici of Tuscany. His esteem for the form led to the establishment of the Grand Ducal workshop, Opificio delle Pietre Dure, founded in 1588 in Florence and still in operation today. Among the countless items created by the Grand Ducal workshop is the original pietre dure tabletop depicting clusters of flowers and fruits, on which the design of our presentation box is based.

Varnished wood with a black lacquered finish; with a ceramic tile top and burgundy velvet interior. Length 6 3/4 in., width 6 3/4 in., height 2 3/4 in.
