J. M. W. Turner
J. M. W. Turner

One of the greatest artists of the 19th century, Joseph Mallord William Turner (British, 1775–1851) was a prolific artist producing a number of astonishing artworks. During a lifetime spanning the Napoleonic Wars and the development of new industrial technologies, Turner responded to the world around him with intense curiosity and visionary inspiration. Again and again, Turner’s contemporaries were startled and amazed by the unique and revolutionary means with which he depicted the world. Over the century and a half since his death, his works have been seen as paving the way for many subsequent developments in Western painting, from the work of the Impressionists to the furthest reaches of abstraction. Turner also left an indelible mark on American art, from the sublime landscapes of the Hudson River School to the modern masterpieces of Mark Rothko and Cy Twombly. While this book covers Turner's famous works, including the many atmospheric and luminous images of brooding clouds and tempestuous seas that characterize Turner’s later career, many of his lesser-known but equally important pictures are also included. Turner’s unparalleled use of vibrant color culminated in the series of paintings he made of the fire that destroyed the Houses of Parliament in 1834, reproduced in their entirety in this volume for the first time. This publication accompanies the first major exhibition of Turner’s paintings and watercolors in the United States in over forty years, and brings together many of the finest examples of his work from both sides of the Atlantic, including masterpieces from the artist’s bequest housed at the Tate Britain. Overflowing with lavish illustrations, this volume is the perfect introduction to the life and work of this visionary genius.

272 pages, 250 illustrations (245 in full color), 9 3/4 in. x 12 in. Paper.
