Sale - Chinese Bi Pendant

Our pendant is adapted from a Neolithic jade Chinese Bi disk from about 2400 B.C. Bi—or perforated circular disks—were important ceremonial objects in ancient Chinese culture. The specific function and meaning of these disks is unknown, but as late as the Han dynasty (206 B.C.–A.D. 220), jade disks served a ritual function in aristocratic burials, often placed on the chest and above and below the head and feet of the deceased. In the second century, bi were often decorated with dragons, representing movement from the earthly to the celestial realm.

Sterling silver. Pendant length 1 1/4 in.; chain length 18 in. With a lobster claw clasp.
