Our panel reproduces a vibrant detail from a six-panel Japanese folding screen from the Edo period (1615–1868) made of ink, color, and gold on gilded paper in the Museum’s collection. The Edo period was a time of relative peace and stability, following centuries of warfare and cultural disruption in Japan. This era of calm is marked by an extraordinary expansion in creative expression and flourishing arts, as new forms of highly entertaining drama, literature, painting, and printmaking catered to popular trends of the day.
