David Milne Watercolours: Painting Towards the Light
David Milne Watercolours: Painting Towards the Light

By Katharine Lochnan, with contributions by John O’Brian, Dennis Reid, David P. Silcox, Rosemarie L. Tovell and Carol Troyen. Published in conjunction with the exhibition "David Milne Watercolors: Painting Toward the Light" at The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, November 8, 2005–January 29, 2006.

Canadian painter David Milne (1882–1953) lived and worked in New York and rural Ontario and produced a substantial body of work in oil, watercolor, and print media despite the limited prominence he experienced during his lifetime. Having spent nearly 25 years working in the United States during the early part of his career, much of Milne’s time was spent in New York City (1903–16), where he exhibited modernist works in the 1913 Armory Show, and in upstate New York (1916–18, 1920–21, 1924–29), where he was inspired by the natural scenery. These stays, as well as his travel in Europe during World War I and his final years in Canada (1929–53), precipitated shifts in his subject matter and painting style. Although major exhibitions have been devoted to his paintings and prints, his brilliant watercolors have never before been revealed in depth. This lavishly illustrated book, featuring essays and an annotated chronology by Milne experts, accompanies the first major exhibition of his work to travel outside of Canada.

192 pages, 134 illustrations (84 in full color), 11 x 9 1/2 in. Hardcover, with jacket.
