New - The Roads to Santiago: The Medieval Pilgrim Routes Through France and Spain to Santiago de Compostela
The Roads to Santiago: The Medieval Pilgrim Routes Through France and Spain to Santiago de Compostela

By Derry Brabbs

According to legend, St. James the Apostle preached throughout the Iberian Peninsula. His bones found their way to northern Spain, to the cathedral at Santiago de Compostela, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Even today, tens of thousands of pilgrims and tourists travel the routes to savor the breathtaking scenery and inspirational medieval architecture. Renowned landscape photographer Derry Brabbs has captured the true spirit of this remarkable journey. From the endless vistas of central France and the atmospheric salt marches of the Camargue, the pilgrim roads converge in the mountain passes of the Pyrenees, and then forge a path across the desolate beauty of the Spanish meseta. Magnificent religious architecture graces an ever-changing landscape as the route progresses westward, often on dedicated walkers’ paths through remote countryside, relieved by occasional villages and hospices that still evoke the spirit of the 12th century, when the pilgrimage was at its height of popularity. Covering all four major routes through France and the Camino Frances across Spain, this is the essential companion for those who have traveled or intend to travel this path, whether as pilgrims or tourists.

256 pages, 220 color illustrations. 10 1/4 in. x 12 in. Hardcover; clothbound, with jacket.
