The Museum’s cross pendant is a miniaturized adaptation of a cross created in Italy sometime between the 14th and 15th centuries. The original cross is housed in the Museum’s collection of Medieval Art, which encompasses the art of this long and complex period, from the early Christian works of the 4th century through the Byzantine, Romanesque, and Gothic periods to the early 16th century. The elegant form of the original cross, with its gleaming gilded surface and colorful enamel, typifies the work of Italian goldsmiths in the years leading up to the Renaissance.

14K gold, with amethysts and a 14K gold chain. Cross length 1 1/8 in.; chain length 18 in. With a lobster claw clasp.
