Shawabti statuettes were placed in tombs to perform menial labors for the deceased. In the New Kingdom they frequently took the form of mummies. Our Mummy Bookmark is adapted from a shawabti (Egyptian, late Dynasty 18–Dynasty 19, about 1336–1250 B.C.) now in the Museum's collection.
